Ben Cardin is a lifelong supporter of the state of Israel and a passionate advocate of Jewish domestic concerns. Senator Cardin re-elected to his second term in the Senate in 2012. He serves on the Foreign Relations, Finance, Environment and Public Works, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship committees. As a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Cardin has continued to champion issues that are important to the safety of Israel as a free and democratic Jewish state. A fierce voice against Iran and its belligerent regime, Senator Cardin has pushed for strong sanctions and increased diplomatic isolation. Senator Cardin has been very clear that a permanent and peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved through direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Senator Cardin also advocated for Israel’s admission into the multilateral Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Senator Cardin works across party lines introducing a bipartisan resolution with Senator Susan Collins condemning anti-Semitism and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to fight anti-Semitism as a top foreign policy priority. He also was also the lead sponsor with Indiana Senator Richard Lugar of a Senate resolution supporting the goals and objectives of the Prague Conference on Holocaust Era Assets. The Washington Post has said that he is "a legislator's legislator" and "is sensible, tough-minded and independent.” Senator Cardin and his family are long-time members of Beth Tfiloh in Baltimore. Senator Cardin is married to Myrna Edelman Cardin and his daughter Deborah and son-in-law Jonathan Willis have two daughters, Madeline and Julia.
